Fat, oil and grease
Poured down the kitchen sink, fats cool and harden inside the pipe, catching food debris until the pipe narrows and blocks. This is one of the most common causes we see.

Even wipes labelled flushable do not break down like toilet paper. They snag and build up until the toilet stops draining.
Root ingress
Outside, tree roots push through tiny joint gaps in search of water and slowly choke the pipe.

What you can safely try yourself
For a minor indoor blockage, a few simple steps are worth a go:
- Boil a kettle and pour hot (not boiling) water slowly down the plughole to soften grease.
- Use a plunger to shift a nearby blockage.
- Check and clean the sink trap under the basin.
